If you know healthy eating is critical for your family but you also feel it’s easier said than done, you’re not alone. Just in time for national nutrition month, a study was released this week that showed 97% of parents agree that a healthy diet during childhood leads to lifelong healthy habits. That’s the good news. However, when the same parents were asked if their own children’s diets were very nutritious, only 17% agreed.
Although almost all parents agree their kids need to eat healthy, only 17% of us acknowledge doing a good job. What are the other 80% of parents doing? We have seen the 80/20 rule played out across many stages, but none cuts so close to home as the health of our children! Turns out only 1/3 of parents are confident they are doing a good job shaping their child’s eating habits. The other 2/3 of us admit to needing help to make the positive lifestyle changes needed to lead to better family health.
The help parents indicated needing are:
o Help with shopping for family meals
o Help with family meal preparation
o Help with other household chores so mealtimes are not so hectic
o Easy-to-understand information on how to identify packaged foods that are healthy
o Ideas on how to make kid-friendly recipes a little healthier
o Suggestions for convincing picky eaters to try a more balanced diet
